Becoming a dental istant necessary to become a dentist?

I want to become a dentist and I know it would look good on my applications if I took a dental istant program but I herd it's a waste of time. I can use that time to shadow a dentist, volunteer and do community service which is recommended. So should I do the dental istant program or go straight after all my volunteer and community services?
